Short answer: Southside and Baymeadows are Jacksonville's practical middle: apartment and townhome heavy, close to the big employers and the big shopping, and connected to everywhere else by the highways that define them.
The feel. This is the part of town built for getting things done. Office parks, newer complexes, and every errand within fifteen minutes. It is less postcard than the historic neighborhoods and more convenient than almost anywhere.
Who it suits. Newcomers land here first for a reason: plentiful rentals, central position, and no bet placed yet on which side of the city will claim you. Plenty of people try Southside for a year and then stay a decade.
Day to day. The St. Johns Town Center area anchors the shopping and dining, with everything from /directory/?cat=Retail+%26+Shopping to /directory/?cat=Fitness+%26+Gyms in a tight radius. Commutes flex in every direction, which is the whole pitch.
Worth knowing. Traffic on the main corridors is real at rush hour, and complex quality varies more than photos admit. Visit at 6 pm, not 2 pm, and read reviews in the /directory with the Southside zone selected.
