Short answer: Jacksonville's best assets are free. Miles of public beach, the biggest urban park system in the country, a riverfront made for walking, and neighborhoods that reward an afternoon of wandering.
The beaches. Public access runs the length of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach. Sunrise costs nothing and neither does the sandbar at low tide. Locals park once and walk the three towns in an afternoon.
The parks. Jacksonville's park system is enormous. Riverfront lawns downtown, oak canopies in the older neighborhoods, and wilder preserves on the Northside where the salt marsh takes over. You can hike, paddle and birdwatch for a year without repeating yourself.
The neighborhoods. Riverside and Avondale reward a slow walk: historic homes, small parks and shopfronts that have been there a century. San Marco square is the same trick on the other side of the river.
The water itself. The St. Johns is the city's front yard. Watch the ships come in, fish from a public pier, or just sit on a riverfront bench at sunset and understand why people stay.
